‘Vote Mr President, I want to enjoy Nigeria in my old age ’ – Remi Tinubu

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on voters in the South-East to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for another term in office in 2027.

She made the appeal on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, where she visited as part of her South-East tour to distribute empowerment items to women.

Addressing the gathering, the First Lady said her administration and that of her husband were committed to building a better country, adding that she hoped to benefit from the improvements being made in Nigeria as she grows older.

“Make una vote for Mr President, we go work for una and Nigeria go better.

“I want to enjoy Nigeria at old age, so I will work for Nigeria, for my old age,” she said.

The empowerment initiative, according to Tinubu, is being implemented through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, with 18,500 women expected to benefit nationwide when the programme is completed.

In the South-East, she said 500 women in each of the region’s five states would receive equipment to strengthen their businesses. The items include generators, industrial grinding machines, gas cylinders and ovens.

The number of beneficiaries in Imo, however, will rise to 2,500 following an intervention by Governor Hope Uzodimma, who, she said, had provided additional empowerment items for 2,000 women.

Tinubu responded to the governor’s gesture by announcing an extra N100,000 cash support for every beneficiary of the programme.

She explained that the initiative was part of efforts to acknowledge women’s contribution to Nigeria’s economic growth and national development.

“Recognising the typical role women play in nation building, this is in line with the agenda of Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises economic growth and sustainable development for all Nigerians, particularly women,” she said.

The First Lady encouraged the beneficiaries to make productive use of the items and financial assistance, saying they could provide a foundation for improving their families’ standard of living.

“Let it serve as a foundation for creating a better life for you and your family,” she said.

Uzodimma, while speaking at the event, praised the First Lady for her efforts towards nation-building and her focus on improving the welfare of Nigerians.

He said Imo residents were satisfied with what he described as the President’s achievements and were prepared to support his re-election.

According to the governor, the state had also benefited from federal infrastructure and other development initiatives under the Tinubu administration.

“Let him know that Imo people are happy with him, that we are happy with his performance. Let him know that he is doing very well, that we stand with him and that we deeply appreciate his resolute commitment to a stronger, more prosperous, safer and more united Nigeria,” Uzodimma said.

He further assured the President of the state’s backing in the 2027 presidential election.

“I assure you that we will reciprocate this love. We will stand firmly behind our beloved President in January 2027. We will speak with one united, unequivocal voice to stand by those who have consistently stood by us,” he said.

The visit also featured a traditional honour for the First Lady, who was conferred with the chieftaincy title of Osodieme by the traditional institution in Imo State.
