US Closes Embassy in Lagos, Abuja

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of its diplomatic offices in Abuja and Lagos in observance of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration.

In a public notice released on Friday, the mission confirmed that both the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos would remain closed throughout June 12, 2026, in line with the Federal Government’s declaration of a national public holiday.

According to the statement, the closure is intended to honour Nigeria’s Democracy Day, an annual event that commemorates the country’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made in the struggle for civilian rule.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 12, 2026, in observance of the Democracy Day holiday,” the mission stated.

The temporary suspension of routine services follows the Nigerian government’s decision to declare June 12 a public holiday nationwide to mark 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

Democracy Day remains one of Nigeria’s most significant national observances, commemorating the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country’s history. The date serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and citizens who fought for the restoration and preservation of democratic rule.

As part of the national celebration, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed Nigerians in a Democracy Day broadcast, urging citizens to remain optimistic despite the country’s economic and security challenges. The President called on Nigerians to continue believing in the nation’s future and to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development.

Normal operations at the U.S. diplomatic missions are expected to resume after the holiday.
