UK Police Launch Manhunt for Nigerian Prisoner After Dramatic Escape from Security Van in London

Police authorities in the United Kingdom have launched an intensive search operation for a Nigerian man who escaped from custody while being transported through southeast London.

The fugitive, identified as Temitope Segun, reportedly fled from a prison transport vehicle on Monday evening after allegedly overpowering a security officer during transit.

According to the Metropolitan Police Service, the 25-year-old was last seen around 6:40 p.m. in the Woolwich High Street area shortly after making his escape.

Authorities disclosed that Segun had been transported from Bromley Magistrates’ Court to HMP Thameside when the incident occurred.

Investigators said he allegedly assaulted a prison escort officer before fleeing from the vehicle, triggering an immediate manhunt across parts of southeast London.

Security Contractor Opens Investigation

Private security company [Serco](https://www.serco.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), which was responsible for transporting the prisoner at the time of the escape, confirmed the incident and said an internal investigation had been launched to determine how the breach occurred.

Police have circulated Segun’s description and are appealing to members of the public to assist with information that could lead to his arrest.

He was last seen wearing a black jacket, black trousers, and black trainers. Detectives believe he may have connections to several communities in southeast London, including Woolwich, Plumstead, and Abbey Wood.

Leading the search effort, Detective Sergeant Claudine Manning said officers are working tirelessly to locate the escapee.

“My team of dedicated officers are working around the clock to trace and apprehend Temitope Segun,” she said.

She urged anyone who sees the suspect or has information regarding his whereabouts to contact emergency services immediately.

Public Warned Not to Approach Suspect

The Metropolitan Police have advised residents not to attempt to confront or detain Segun if spotted.

Instead, members of the public are being encouraged to call emergency services on 999 and provide any relevant information that may assist investigators.

The incident has sparked concerns over prisoner transportation security procedures and is expected to prompt further scrutiny of custody transfer operations carried out by private contractors on behalf of UK correctional authorities.
