Two Killed, Three Injured as Gunmen Attack Burial Ceremony in Kaduna Community

Tragedy struck Angwar Magaji village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State after suspected armed bandits attacked a burial ceremony, killing two people and injuring three others.

The deadly incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when mourners had gathered to pay their final respects to a deceased member of the community.

According to local sources, the attackers stormed the village unexpectedly and opened fire on residents attending the funeral gathering, turning what was meant to be a solemn occasion into a scene of panic and bloodshed.

Witnesses said the sound of gunfire sent mourners scrambling for safety as people fled in different directions to escape the attack. The sudden assault disrupted the burial activities and left the community in shock.

The development was disclosed by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, in a post shared on his social media platform.

Information obtained from security sources indicated that the armed men arrived in significant numbers and operated within the community for several minutes before escaping.

By the time the attackers retreated, two residents had been fatally shot and were confirmed dead at the scene. Three other victims sustained gunshot wounds of varying severity during the attack.

The injured persons were immediately evacuated to the Primary Health Care Centre in Barkin Kogi, where medical personnel are currently providing treatment and monitoring their condition.

Following a distress call from residents, troops operating under Operation Enduring Peace were mobilised to the area to contain the situation and prevent further attacks.

Although the soldiers reportedly arrived after the assailants had fled, they secured the community, assisted in emergency response efforts and helped facilitate the evacuation of the injured victims for medical attention.

Security agencies have since launched efforts to track down the perpetrators, with surveillance operations reportedly intensified across neighbouring communities and known criminal routes within the area.

Authorities are also said to be gathering intelligence aimed at identifying those responsible and preventing future attacks in the region.

The incident has heightened concerns over the persistent security challenges affecting parts of Kaduna State, where rural communities have continued to face threats from armed groups involved in banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Residents of Angwar Magaji expressed grief and outrage over the attack, noting that burial ceremonies are traditionally regarded as sacred gatherings where families and community members come together to mourn and support one another.

Community leaders and residents have renewed calls for increased security deployment, urging the government and security agencies to strengthen their presence in vulnerable rural settlements frequently targeted by armed criminals.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns about insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria and underscores the need for sustained efforts to protect communities from recurring violence.
