BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu Announces Dissolution of IPOB Directorate, Appoints New Leadership Team

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has announced a major restructuring of the organisation’s leadership, dissolving the third administration of its Directorate of State (DOS) and inaugurating a new leadership team.

The announcement was contained in a statement dated June 17, 2026, and issued from Langerfeld, Germany, where the organisation’s leadership said the changes were aimed at repositioning the movement and addressing what it described as shortcomings under the previous administration.

Under the new arrangement, Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ, who is based in the United States, was appointed as the Head of the newly inaugurated fourth administration of the Directorate of State. He is expected to oversee the day-to-day affairs, coordination and administration of IPOB activities under the directives of Kanu.

According to the statement, the Directorate of State was established in 2012 as the administrative arm of IPOB and has undergone several leadership transitions since its creation. The first administration was headed by Dr. Justin Akujieze, followed by Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu, while Chika Edoziem led the third administration after his appointment during Kanu’s detention in 2017.

The organisation explained that the decision to dissolve the outgoing leadership followed an internal assessment of its performance, particularly regarding the welfare of detained members, organisational cohesion, strategic communication and overall management of the movement.

IPOB alleged that one of the most significant concerns was the handling of members detained in various correctional and military facilities, including individuals held for extended periods without trial. The statement claimed that insufficient attention had been given to securing their release and supporting their welfare.

The organisation also accused the outgoing administration of focusing excessively on internal disputes and factional disagreements rather than advancing the movement’s broader objectives.

According to the statement, internal divisions and communication challenges weakened confidence among supporters and affected the movement’s public image.

IPOB maintained that the restructuring should not be viewed as punitive but rather as an effort to renew the organisation, strengthen discipline, improve accountability and restore focus to its stated objectives.

As part of the reorganisation, a new leadership structure comprising officials responsible for finance, welfare, media, continental coordination and diplomatic engagement was unveiled.

The group also announced the creation of an Elders Advisory Council, which it said would serve as a strategic advisory body positioned between the movement’s leader and the Directorate of State. The council is expected to provide guidance, institutional continuity and policy advice to the new administration.

In another major decision, IPOB declared that all previous suspensions and expulsions within the organisation had been lifted, with affected members reinstated pending any future administrative reviews.

The statement further directed all coordinators, officers and functionaries worldwide to establish contact with the organisation’s headquarters for further instructions and to cooperate fully with the new leadership team.

IPOB also advised its supporters to rely only on Biafra Radio and Biafran Vanguard for official information and updates, while efforts are reportedly underway to recover and restore other communication platforms associated with the movement.

The organisation said the newly inaugurated administration would focus on rebuilding unity, strengthening internal structures, improving communication and advancing its campaign for self-determination.

The leadership transition represents one of the most significant organisational changes within IPOB in recent years and signals a fresh phase in the movement’s internal administration and strategic direction.
