State Govt Declares Public Holiday to Mark Islamic New Year 1448 AH

The Jigawa State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448 After Hijrah (AH).

The announcement was made in an official statement issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Isma’ila Ibrahim Dutse.

According to the statement, the holiday is intended to provide civil servants and residents across the state with the opportunity to participate in activities associated with the Islamic New Year and reflect on its religious significance.

Government Urges Prayers for Peace and Development

The Head of the State Civil Service, Alhaji Muhammad K. Dagaceri, called on citizens to use the occasion as a period of spiritual reflection and renewed commitment to values that promote peace and progress.

He encouraged residents to offer prayers for the continued stability, unity, and prosperity of Jigawa State and Nigeria as a whole.

Dagaceri noted that the Islamic New Year serves as an important reminder of faith, sacrifice, and the need for individuals to strengthen their relationship with God while contributing positively to society.

Call to Uphold Islamic Values

The Head of Service also urged Muslims and other residents to emulate the virtues, teachings, and exemplary lifestyle of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), stressing the importance of compassion, honesty, tolerance, and good conduct in daily life.

He emphasized that adherence to these principles would help foster harmony among communities and contribute to the overall development of the state.

According to him, the beginning of a new Islamic year presents an opportunity for self-assessment, moral renewal, and greater dedication to the values that unite society.

Appeal for Lawfulness and Social Harmony

The state government further appealed to residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the celebrations.

Dagaceri urged citizens to avoid actions capable of disrupting public order or undermining the peaceful atmosphere currently enjoyed in Jigawa State.

He stressed the need for collective responsibility in preserving security and strengthening social cohesion across communities.

Significance of the Islamic New Year

The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of a new year in the Islamic lunar calendar and commemorates the historic migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah.

For Muslims around the world, the occasion is regarded as a period of reflection, prayer, and renewed commitment to faith and righteous living.

The Jigawa State Government expressed optimism that the commencement of the year 1448 AH would inspire residents to embrace higher moral standards, deepen peaceful coexistence, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth and development.

As preparations for the observance continue, residents have been encouraged to celebrate responsibly and use the occasion to promote unity, understanding, and mutual respect among all members of society.
