Canada booked a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time goal sealed a 1-0 victory over South Africa in a tense Round of 32 clash.

The Canadians appeared destined for extra time before Eustaquio struck in the third minute of added time to send Jesse Marsch’s side into the next round for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history.

The victory keeps Canada’s dream tournament alive, while South Africa’s campaign ends after a disciplined defensive performance was undone in the closing moments.

Eustaquio breaks South African resistance

Clear-cut chances were scarce throughout a cagey contest, with both teams struggling to create attacking opportunities.

Canada threatened mainly from set-pieces but failed to make their dominance count against a well-organised South African defence.

The game’s best chance before the winner came in the 64th minute when Tani Oluwaseyi broke clear of the defence. His effort was saved before Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced a timely clearance to prevent a rebound.

Captain Alphonso Davies returned from injury in the 75th minute, replacing Tajon Buchanan, and helped inject fresh energy into Canada’s attack during the closing stages.

The breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time. Jacob Shaffelburg’s cross was only partially cleared, allowing Eustaquio to control the loose ball at the edge of the penalty area before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

The late strike sparked jubilant celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters as the final whistle confirmed their place in the last 16.

The win marks Canada’s first knockout-stage victory at a FIFA World Cup and continues an impressive campaign under head coach Jesse Marsch.
