A 50-year-old man identified as Yuri from Rylsk has survived after doctors discovered a 12-centimetre wooden branch lodged deep inside his skull months after a gardening accident.

According to reports, the incident happened in 2024 while Yuri was cutting maple branches in his garden without wearing protective goggles.

During the work, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his left eye and suspected that a small piece of wood had struck him.

However, because the pain later reduced, he assumed the injury was minor and did not think much about it afterward.

Over time, Yuri continued experiencing occasional pain and discomfort in the eye but reportedly could not identify the exact cause.

He visited several eye specialists, but none of the treatments prescribed solved the problem.

His condition reportedly worsened three months ago after he began losing vision in the affected eye and suffering severe discomfort.

Earlier this month, Yuri sought treatment at Kursk Regional Hospital, where doctors conducted an MRI scan.

The scan reportedly revealed a long foreign object extending from his eye socket deep into his skull.

According to doctors, further CT scans confirmed that the object was a tree branch that had penetrated through the eye socket and reached dangerously close to important brain structures.

“A CT scan showed that the foreign body was a branch that penetrated the eye socket, destroying the sinuses and damaging the base of the skull,” doctors explained.

After hearing the diagnosis, Yuri reportedly remembered the gardening accident from months earlier.

Doctors later performed surgery and successfully removed the 12-centimetre branch through his nose without making any external cuts.

Medical officials confirmed that the operation was successful and that Yuri’s eyesight was preserved.

Although he remains under medication, doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
