Police Arrest Suspect Over Death of UCC Student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the death of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, police said the suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team after intelligence-led operations.

The suspect was reportedly arrested on June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast.

According to police, preliminary investigations suggest that Mensah allegedly picked up Innocentia from the Ayensu Plaza area within the UCC hostel enclave on June 11, 2026, around 6:48 p.m.

Police said the suspect, who claims to be a teacher and also works as a driver, allegedly took her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen before her body was later found.

The arrest is considered a major development in a case that has raised concern among the UCC community and the wider public.

Innocentia, a Level 200 student, was reported missing after leaving campus to meet a friend. Her body was later discovered washed ashore near Hutchland Beach Resort in Cape Coast.

The Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing and additional updates will be provided as the case progresses.
