PHOTOS: Truck Loaded With Military Camouflage, Illicit Drugs Intercepted in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has recorded a major security breakthrough following the interception of a truck allegedly transporting dozens of sacks containing military camouflage uniforms and cartons of suspected illicit substances.

The operation, which led to the arrest of three suspects, was carried out by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit in the Surulere area of Lagos State.

Speaking during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended based on credible intelligence received by security operatives.

The arrested individuals were identified as Chinedu David, 29; Ezeagwu Chukwuma, 38; and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi, 45.

According to the police commissioner, the suspects were taken into custody on the night of June 20 alongside an unregistered MAN diesel truck allegedly used to transport the recovered items.

Large Cache of Military Uniforms Recovered

Tijani revealed that a thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 47 sacks filled with military camouflage uniforms as well as 80 cartons containing substances suspected to be illegal drugs.

He described the seizure as a significant achievement in the command’s efforts to combat criminal activities and prevent security breaches.

“Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, acting on credible intelligence, recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of three suspects identified as Chinedu David, Ezeagwu Chukwuma and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi.

“The operation led to the recovery of one unregistered MAN diesel truck loaded with 47 sacks of military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of substances suspected to be illicit drugs,” the police commissioner stated.

Consignment Allegedly Bound for South-East

Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the consignment was allegedly being transported from Lagos to a destination in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Authorities said efforts are currently underway to determine the exact source of the recovered military uniforms and suspected drugs, as well as identify the intended recipients and other individuals connected to the operation.

The commissioner noted that investigators are exploring all possible leads to uncover the network behind the shipment and establish the level of involvement of each suspect.

“Investigation is ongoing to determine the source, ownership and intended recipients of the recovered items, and to establish the extent of the suspects’ involvement,” he said.

Police Address Security Concerns

Responding to concerns about the potential security implications of the seizure, Tijani assured Lagos residents that there was no immediate threat to public safety within the state.

According to him, available information suggests that the truck was merely passing through Lagos and that the recovered items were not intended for distribution within the state.

However, he stressed that the discovery remains a matter of serious concern, particularly given the increasing use of military-style uniforms by criminal elements across different parts of the country.

“It does not pose any form of threat to Lagos State. They were moving out of the state. But considering the current security challenges in the country, where criminals have been seen disguising themselves in military uniforms, we cannot rule out any possibility,” he stated.

Investigation Continues

The police command reiterated its commitment to intensifying intelligence-led operations aimed at preventing the circulation of prohibited items and disrupting criminal networks.

Authorities assured the public that anyone found to be connected to the shipment would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The latest seizure comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the illegal movement of military equipment, weapons and narcotics, which authorities say often contribute to criminal activities and insecurity across the country.
