The Nigerian entertainment industry was enveloped in grief on Wednesday as prominent actors, musicians, comedians, and other celebrities gathered in Lagos to honour the memory of late Nollywood star Alexx Ekubo during his service of songs.

The solemn event, held at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, brought together colleagues, friends, family members, and admirers of the actor, who passed away on May 11, 2026, following a battle with complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

Ekubo reportedly died at Evercare Hospital, where he had been receiving medical care.

The service of songs served as a moment of reflection and celebration of the actor’s life, with attendees paying tribute to his contributions to Nollywood and the wider entertainment industry. Many were seen sharing memories of his career, personality, and the impact he had on those around him.

Earlier, the Ekubo family had released details of the funeral arrangements, expressing both sorrow and gratitude for what they described as a life that was “beautifully lived and deeply impactful.”

According to the family, the service of songs took place on June 10, 2026, while a wake-keep is scheduled for June 17 at the family residence in Aziukwukwa, Ujari Village, Arochukwu, Abia State.

The funeral service will be held on June 18 at Mary Slessor School, after which the actor will be laid to rest at the family compound.

A reception is also expected to follow immediately after the interment, providing an opportunity for family members, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers to further celebrate his life and legacy.

In their statement, the family described Ekubo as a beloved husband, son, brother, friend, and colleague whose life touched countless people across different walks of life.

They also appealed to fans and members of the public to continue praying for his wife and the entire family as they navigate the difficult period of mourning.

The gathering of some of Nigeria’s biggest entertainment figures at the service of songs underscored the deep respect and affection the late actor commanded within the industry.
