One Month Old Brazilian Baby Declared Dead Comes Back To Life Inside Body Bag At Funeral Home

According to a report by The Sun on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, a one month old baby who was pronounced dead miraculously came back to life while inside a body bag as his parents prepared for his funeral.

Noah Gabriel da Cruz Santos had been declared dead in Rio Claro, Sao Paulo, on July 15, after doctors at Santa Casa de Rio Claro hospital carried out resuscitation attempts for around 45 minutes following a cardio-respiratory arrest.

His parents, Leticia Cristina da Cruz Santos and Josenildo, had already been given time to say a final goodbye to their son before he was taken away to be buried.

Funeral worker Regina Celia Paschoal, who has 17 years of experience, said she was preparing to collect Noah when she noticed the bag shifting despite being taped shut.

“The black bag where the baby was started moving,” she said.

“I thought, ‘Am I seeing something that isn’t there?’” She alerted her colleagues before opening the bag to check on the infant.

“I opened it and the baby started moving even more. He was making a noise, as if he wanted to breathe,” Paschoal said.

She described the moment as unlike anything she had witnessed in her career, saying, “It was a huge shock and an overwhelming emotion to arrive to collect a tiny baby who had been declared dead and find that he was alive.”

Noah was immediately reassessed and returned to the neonatal intensive care unit for continued treatment.

Noah was born prematurely on June 15 with a cleft palate, a condition involving an opening in the roof of the mouth that can affect feeding, speech, hearing and dental development.

He had remained in hospital awaiting transfer to a specialist facility when the cardiac arrest occurred on the day he turned one month old.

His mother Leticia said she was overwhelmed after receiving an unexpected call asking the family to return to the hospital.

“Sometimes I think we are dreaming. Looking at him moving and kicking his legs, with his eyes open, we are amazed,” she said.

Santa Casa de Rio Claro said in a statement that all technical and legal protocols for confirming death had been rigorously followed and that no failure in care or procedure had been identified.
