I Will Not Say Gbajabiamila Concerned #54 Billion, But I Will Explain Exactly What Happened -Gbillah
During an interview on SYMFONI, former House of Representatives member Mark Gbillah addressed reports linking Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, to an alleged ₦54 billion controversy involving the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
He stressed that his intention was not to accuse any individual of diverting public funds but to explain the issues that prompted public concern.
Gbillah said discussions surrounding the matter should be based on available documents and the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act rather than speculation or sensational claims. He maintained that the public deserves a clear understanding of the decisions that were made and the legal framework governing them.
According to him, much of the public conversation has focused on whether funds were diverted, while the more important issue is whether the process that led to the movement of the funds complied with the law establishing the NUPRC.
He argued that accountability requires public officials to explain the basis for major financial decisions, particularly where statutory allocations and regulatory funding are involved. He said transparency is necessary to avoid confusion and restore public confidence.
During the interview, Gbillah stated, “I Will Not Say Gbajabiamila Cornered ₦54 Billion, But I Will Explain Exactly What Happened.”
He explained that his comments were intended to distinguish between allegations of financial diversion and questions about whether the appropriate legal procedures were followed. According to him, those are separate issues that should not be confused.
Gbillah maintained that his position is based on the interpretation of the Petroleum Industry Act and other available records, adding that Nigerians should carefully examine the facts before reaching conclusions about the controversy.
He further stated that if government agencies provide all the relevant documents relating to the transactions, the public would be able to assess whether the actions taken complied with existing laws.
He concluded that his objective is to encourage transparency and accountability, insisting that public institutions should openly explain decisions involving significant public funds instead of allowing uncertainty to persist……See More
