OAU final-year student allegedly commits su!cide

Oluwole Seun, a final year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has allegedly d!ed by su!cide.

The motive behind his action remains unknown, as close friends noted they observed no unusual behaviour prior to the incident.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

According to the statement, the management confirmed receiving an emergency report at approximately 1:30 pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. 

The incident occurred at an off-campus apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.

Olarewaju said upon receiving the report, OAU’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was dispatched to the scene alongside officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.

He said the student was transported to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor pronounced him d3ad on arrival.

OAU management expressed deep concern over the tragedy, confirming that items and information recovered from the scene have been turned over to the police, who have launched a full investigation into the d3ath. Student Affairs authorities have also been notified to provide welfare support to affected students.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of the deceased.

Professor Bamire urged any students experiencing emotional distress, academic pressures, or personal difficulties to utilise official campus support structures.

“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” he said. 

The university administration urged community members to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified speculation while the police investigation continues.
