The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, over an alleged money laundering case involving more than N500 billion.
According to reports, Abdullahi was arrested in Abuja on Wednesday by operatives of the anti-graft agency and is currently in EFCC custody for further questioning and investigation.
Sources said the investigation is linked to alleged financial transactions and suspected diversion of public funds running into billions of naira.
However, the EFCC has yet to release an official statement detailing the allegations against the Energy Commission boss.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Abdullahi as the third Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria on October 24, 2023.
Before his appointment, Abdullahi served as Senior Technical Adviser to the Minister of Innovation, Science andTechnology, Uche Nnaji.
He is a chartered engineer and also a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
The arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by the EFCC to intensify its crackdown on corruption, financial crimes and alleged abuse of public office across the country.
