Motorcyclist Records Moment He Bribed Police Officer At Sowutuom Station

A video allegedly showing a motorcyclist bribing a police officer at the Sowutuom Police Station in Accra has gone viral on social media, reigniting concerns about corruption within the Ghana Police Service.

In the footage, the rider is seen handing over GH¢100 to the officer, reportedly in an attempt to secure the release of his seized motorbike without following the formal retrieval process.

The phrase “Go and lock the motor!” was heard in the clip has since become the defining line of the viral moment, appearing to suggest that the transaction was accepted and the officer directed the rider to proceed with unlocking the impounded motorcycle.

The incident, which was apparently recorded without the knowledge of those involved, has drawn sharp criticism from the public, with many calling on the Ghana Police Service and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice to investigate the conduct of the officer seen in the footage.

Bribery of a public officer is a criminal offence under Ghanaian law. Section 239 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) criminalises the offering and receiving of bribes by public officials, with offenders liable to prosecution and imprisonment upon conviction.

The Ghana Police Service had not issued an official statement responding to the video at the time of publication. It remains unclear whether any internal disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against the officer involved.
