Mother Sentenced to 50 Years for Shooting 13-Year-Old Daughter in the Neck

A Prince George’s County woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after being convicted of shooting her 13-year-old daughter in the neck during an argument at their Maryland home.

Talecka C. Brown, 33, was found guilty of several charges, including attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. The incident happened in September 2024 at the family’s home in Seat Pleasant.

Investigators said Brown and her daughter got into an argument before Brown retrieved a handgun and shot the teenager in the back of the neck. The girl survived the shooting but suffered life-threatening injuries and required extensive medical treatment.

Authorities said Brown initially gave investigators false accounts of what happened. She allegedly claimed that a homeless person had shot her daughter and later suggested the teenager had already been injured before she returned home.

However, investigators found evidence showing the shooting occurred inside the residence. They also found no signs of forced entry or evidence that an intruder had entered the home.

Prosecutors said the victim later told investigators that Brown instructed her to tell police that an unknown person had broken into the house and shot her. Surveillance footage and other evidence reportedly showed no one else entering or leaving the residence around the time of the shooting.

During the investigation, Brown allegedly made statements questioning the attempted murder charge and suggested the case could disappear if her daughter did not testify.

After hearing the evidence, a jury convicted Brown in October 2025. Prosecutors highlighted the seriousness of the attack and the long-term physical and emotional impact on the victim during sentencing.

Brown will serve a 50-year prison sentence for what authorities described as a deliberate act of violence against her own child.
