Moroccan woman not with Gumi — Lawyer

A lawyer representing Moroccan woman Khadija Diab has denied claims linking her to Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, saying the woman has been in Morocco since April 2026.

Bilkisu Abdulrasheed Chedi, Executive Director of Women Aware of Rights Initiative, said Khadija returned to Morocco after the organisation helped her obtain an emergency travel document following allegations that her passport was withheld by her husband.

Chedi made the clarification in a video shared on the verified Facebook page of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi on Tuesday amid controversy over Khadija’s whereabouts.

She said Khadija had spent about six months in Morocco and was currently staying with her family.

“All the allegations that she has been with Sheikh Gumi are false and unfounded because it is not possible for a person to be in two different countries at the same time,” the lawyer said.

The lawyer explained that Khadija had approached the organisation in October 2025, alleging domestic abuse, poor maintenance and other marital issues.

She said the organisation advised Khadija to undergo medical examinations after the allegations, adding that the results showed she had contracted sexually transmitted infections.

According to Chedi, Khadija later expressed her decision to leave the marriage, citing emotional and physical abuse.

She said a case was filed at the Area Sharia Court, Daura Road, Kaduna, but proceedings were delayed following legal challenges and other court-related issues.

Chedi said Khadija later became emotionally distressed and requested to return to Morocco.

She added that because the woman’s international passport was allegedly with her husband, the organisation assisted her in securing an emergency travel document from Moroccan authorities.

The lawyer said Moroccan immigration officials confirmed Khadija’s arrival, while the Moroccan Embassy in Nigeria also informed the organisation that she had safely returned home.

Chedi said Khadija had authorised her to continue with legal proceedings before leaving Nigeria.

She added that the earlier case at the Daura Road Sharia Court was discontinued on June 10, 2026, while another case seeking dissolution of the marriage was filed in July.
