Nigerian filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan has weighed in on the discussion of the slow migration of filmmakers from cinema and Television to streaming platforms like YouTube.
The filmmaker, while speaking during an interview, explained that the shift is mainly because of the country’s exchange rate and economy.
Afolayan claimed that most filmmakers who have migrated to YouTube would abandon the platform if the exchange rate were to fall significantly, argued that the financial incentive is a major reason filmmakers are moving their productions to the platform.
“Nigerian filmmakers are rushing to YouTube because of the dollar exchange rate. At N1,400 to $1, they celebrate 1 million views because it can bring in about $10,000. But if the dollar falls to N200, everyone will run away from YouTube,” he stated.
