Mohamed Salah Bows Out As Liverpool Honour Club Legends At Anfield

Liverpool gave a thunderous send-off to Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson before Sunday’s Premier League clash with Brentford as Anfield paid tribute to two modern-day greats leaving the club.

Mohamed Salah started the match in what marked his final appearance at Anfield, days after the Egypt forward stirred debate with blunt comments about Liverpool’s style of play under manager Arne Slot.

The 33-year-old, fondly known by supporters as the “Egyptian King”, walked out last from the tunnel alongside his two daughters under bright sunshine at Anfield. Robertson, who arrived at Liverpool in the same summer as Salah in 2017, was joined by his three children.

Both players received deafening cheers from the crowd in an emotional atmosphere before kick-off.

Supporters filled the stands with banners celebrating the pair’s contribution to the club. One read: “Thank you legends”. Another declared: “We Have Gone From Great To Glory. Salah Is Our King”.

The farewell came against the backdrop of growing tension following Salah’s comments after last week’s defeat at Aston Villa.

In a social media post, the forward said he wanted Liverpool to return to “heavy metal football”, a phrase closely associated with former manager Jurgen Klopp. Several current Liverpool players reportedly liked the post after a frustrating season in which the club failed to challenge for major honours despite winning the Premier League last season.

Slot dismissed suggestions of a rift on Friday. “I think Mo was really happy with the style we played last year as it led to us winning the league,” he said.

“Football has changed, football has evolved but we both want what is best for Liverpool and that is for us to compete for trophies, which we haven’t done this season.”

Salah leaves Liverpool with 257 goals in nine glittering years, behind only club greats Ian Rush and Roger Hunt on the club’s all-time scoring list.

He also departs with a Champions League title and two Premier League crowns, though his final season proved difficult. After finishing as the league’s top scorer with 29 goals last season, Salah managed only seven league goals this campaign.

Liverpool went into the final day of the season three points clear of Bournemouth in the race for the fifth Champions League place, holding a superior goal difference.
