Manchester City to pay Chelsea £17m in compensation after Enzo Maresca switch

Chelsea have confirmed that former head coach Enzo Maresca will pay compensation to the club after completing his move to Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s successor.

Maresca has signed a three-year contract at the Etihad Stadium after City reached an agreement with Chelsea over a compensation package.

While the clubs have not disclosed the fee, BBC Sport reports that Manchester City will pay around £17 million.

Chelsea also revealed they have reached a separate confidential settlement with the Italian following his resignation midway through last season.

Chelsea confirm separate settlement

The Blues said Maresca chose not to continue in his role, leading to a compensation agreement between both parties.

In a statement, Chelsea described his exit as a “decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities” and confirmed that a confidential agreement had been reached over compensation to be paid by the 46-year-old.

Maresca left Stamford Bridge in January after Chelsea won just one of their previous seven Premier League matches.

At the time, the club described the departure as mutual, saying both parties believed “a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.”

Italian apologises to Chelsea fans

Following his appointment at Manchester City, Maresca confirmed that resigning from Chelsea had been his own decision.

“The decision was only mine,” he wrote on Instagram.

The former Chelsea boss admitted his departure caused disruption and apologised to the club.

“I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish.”

He also revealed that leaving Chelsea paved the way for his return to Manchester City, where he previously served as Guardiola’s assistant during the club’s Treble-winning campaign in the 2022-23 season.

City’s appointment of Maresca was delayed while both clubs negotiated compensation terms, bringing an end to Guardiola’s decade-long reign after the Spaniard stepped down at the end of last season.
