Kyari Reacts to Senate Arrest Warrant, Reveals Why He Can’t Appear Before Senate

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has described the Senate Committee on Public Accounts’ decision to issue an arrest warrant against him as “deeply shocking,” insisting that he was abroad for medical reasons and had not attempted to evade legislative scrutiny.

Kyari’s response was contained in a formal letter addressed to the Chairman of the Senate Committee, following reports that lawmakers had ordered his arrest over his failure to appear before the panel investigating financial activities of the national oil company.

Kyari Says Absence Was Due to Medical Treatment

In the letter, Kyari explained that he had earlier notified the committee that he was outside Nigeria undergoing medical treatment and therefore unable to physically attend the hearing.

He maintained that his absence should not be interpreted as disregard for the committee’s invitation, stressing that he had already communicated his situation in a previous correspondence dated May 11, 2026.

“I am deeply shocked by the issuance of the warrant,” he stated, noting that he had clearly informed the committee of his medical trip and intention to appear once he returned to the country.

Kyari added that he had also expressed willingness to submit written responses should his condition or travel schedule affect his ability to appear in person.

Denies Avoiding Senate Investigation

The former NNPCL chief rejected any suggestion that he was deliberately avoiding the Senate panel, insisting that he had not received any fresh summons prior to the issuance of the arrest warrant.

He said he only became aware of the renewed invitation through reports of the committee’s proceedings.

“I have neither received nor sighted the said invitation,” he wrote, adding that he would have honoured the request if it had reached him directly.

Kyari further stated that despite his inability to appear physically, he remained fully committed to cooperating with the investigation and providing all necessary explanations.

Senate Probe into ₦210 Trillion Allegations

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts is currently investigating financial operations within the NNPCL, including alleged discrepancies involving more than ₦210 trillion, which has sparked widespread public attention.

The motion that led to the issuance of the arrest warrant was reportedly moved by Senator Victor Umeh and seconded by Senator Adams Oshiomhole during a committee session.

Lawmakers had expressed dissatisfaction with Kyari’s absence, insisting that his testimony was critical to the ongoing inquiry into the oil sector’s financial operations.

Kyari Defends Tenure at NNPCL

Defending his record, Kyari maintained that his leadership at the national oil company delivered significant reforms, transforming the organisation from a loss-making entity into a profitable commercial enterprise.

He said all transactions carried out under his administration were properly documented and remain available for verification by relevant authorities.

“Proper records of all transactions undertaken during my tenure were duly maintained and remain available for scrutiny,” he stated.

Kyari also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, describing his time as head of the NNPCL as one marked by diligence and commitment to national service.

Legal Representation and Future Appearance

Kyari urged the Senate committee to direct all further inquiries to his legal representatives to ensure timely responses while he continues medical treatment abroad.

He assured lawmakers that he would personally appear before the panel once his health condition improves and he returns to Nigeria.

The former oil chief reaffirmed his respect for the Senate’s constitutional oversight role, adding that he remains ready to fully cooperate with the investigation and provide any clarification required regarding his tenure at the NNPCL.
