Kano Senator Dumps NDC Days After Meeting President Tinubu

The senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District Rufai Sani Hanga, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), just days after meeting President Bola Tinubu.

In a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman in Dakata Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Hanga said his decision took immediate effect.

According to the letter, the senator leaves the party after “careful reflection and personal deliberation.”

“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” Hanga wrote.

He explained that he had decided to withdraw his membership of the party “to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”

The lawmaker expressed appreciation to the ward leadership and members of the party for their support during his time in the NDC.

“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support, and fellowship I enjoyed during my time with the party. I cherish the relationships built and the experiences shared during our political activities together,” he said.

Hanga also requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register, noting that he had attached his official NDC membership card to the resignation letter.

“Please find attached my official NDC membership card. I request that my name be formally removed from the party register at the ward level,” he added.

The senator wished the party well in its future endeavours.

In May, Hanga, the minority whip of the Senate and ally of ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

He cited an internal crisis within the NNPP as the reason for his decision.

His latest resignation comes only days after he met with President Bola Tinubu at the Villa over the weekend, a development that has fuelled political speculation over his next move.

He had reaffirmed his membership of the NDC following the meeting, dismissing speculations linking him to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to a local radio station in Kano, Hanga stated that, “ I still remain a member of the NDC and I have not made any plan of decamping to the APC”.

Hanga, while speaking further, admitted that the NDC did not have the capacity to win the Presidency in 2027 adding that the party lacked the spread and strength needed to defeat the ruling APC in the forthcoming elections.

“NDC will lose Nigeria , they can’t make any impact but I am certain that they will win in Kano State , this I know and as for me, I still remain a member of my party” he had stated.
