Kano: NHRC battles 120 rights complaints

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano received 120 complaints involving alleged human rights violations in August, its state coordinator, Shehu Abdullahi, has said.

Abdullahi disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Monday.

He said the commission had concluded action on 75 of the complaints, while 45 cases remained pending.

According to him, child-related matters accounted for the largest proportion of the complaints, with 80 cases involving child abandonment and violations of children’s rights.

He added that 29 complaints concerned domestic violence and violations of the right to life.

“The remaining 11 cases were on economic and cultural rights, law enforcement abuses and neglect of parental responsibilities,” he said.

Abdullahi also disclosed that the commission intervened in some marital disputes as part of its efforts to protect rights and promote peaceful family relationships.

He called on couples to show greater understanding and tolerance towards each other, saying this would help them discharge their responsibilities more effectively.

The coordinator said the NHRC would sustain and deepen its partnership with security agencies and other relevant organisations to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights in the state.
