Kano Commentator’s Killing: Police arrest two suspects

The Kano State Police Command says two suspects have been arrested over the killing of political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu in the Gaida area of Kumbotso Local Government Area.

Dan Shagamu was reportedly attacked by assailants who broke into his residence late on Monday night and allegedly used sharp objects to inflict injuries on him.

Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed the arrests in a statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

Kiyawa said the incident was reported to the command at about 11:30pm by the Commander of the Gaida Vigilante Group, who alerted the police to the alleged invasion of Danshagamu’s residence.

Following the distress call, officers from the Kumbotso Police Division were dispatched to the scene.

“Operatives of the Kumbotso Police Division promptly responded to the scene and rushed the victim to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital, Kano, where he qqqqwas confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor,” the statement said.

The killing has sparked condemnation from opposition figures, rights organisations and political groups, with calls for the circumstances surrounding the death to be thoroughly investigated.

According to the police, the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation carried out by the Kumbotso Divisional Police Officer in conjunction with tactical units of the command and community stakeholders.

“The suspects are currently in custody undergoing interrogation. The Command has intensified efforts to apprehend any other persons who may be connected to the crime,” the statement said.

The command said investigators were obtaining statements from relevant individuals and conducting forensic procedures as part of efforts to determine exactly what happened and establish the motive for the attack.

Bakori expressed concern over the incident and offered his condolences to Danshagamu’s family, assuring residents that the police would continue investigating the case until those responsible were brought to justice.

“The Kano State Police Command will not relent in its mandate to protect lives and property. We assure the good people of Kano that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” Bakori stated.

The police commissioner also commended the Gaida Vigilante Group for promptly alerting law enforcement authorities, describing the response as an example of the importance of cooperation between communities and security agencies.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and pass credible information to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.

“Investigation into the incident is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon its conclusion,” Kiyawa said.

The command added that additional patrols and intelligence-gathering activities had been introduced in Gaida and surrounding communities to strengthen security and prevent any further disturbance of public order.
