The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he would not reverse the floating of the naira introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration if elected president in 2027.
Obi made the statement during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show while responding to a question on which policy of the Tinubu administration he would retain if he becomes president.
When asked to name one policy he would keep, Obi identified the floating of the naira, though he maintained that the policy must be backed by measures that would increase productivity and improve its value.
“He has one, the floating of the naira. I am not going to defend it, but I am going to put productivity, to make it more valuable to the people,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor said the focus should not only be on currency reforms but on strengthening the productive capacity of the economy so that Nigerians can derive real benefits.
The naira float policy, introduced by the Tinubu administration in 2023, allowed market forces to determine the exchange rate, a move the government said was aimed at unifying the foreign exchange market and improving transparency.
However, the policy has faced criticism over its impact on inflation, cost of living and the purchasing power of Nigerians.
Obi, who has consistently criticised aspects of the current administration’s economic approach, said he would approach the policy differently by focusing on productivity and economic value creation.
