JUST IN: Bandits Strike Kano Again, Abduct APC Chairman, Kill Resident
Suspected bandits have attacked Rantan community in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, killing the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in the ward, Alhaji Garba Buba, and another resident.
The latest incident has added to a growing wave of attacks reported in parts of the state, with several communities facing renewed fear over the activities of armed men.
The attackers reportedly invaded Rantan late on Sunday night and opened fire on residents. Buba was among those hit during the assault.
He was later taken to a hospital for treatment but reportedly died from the injuries he sustained.
Another resident, identified as Sulaiman Zunduma, was also killed during the attack.
Local accounts said another resident, Alhaji Sa’adu, sustained gunshot injuries. The exact number of people injured in the attack could not be independently established.
A resident of the community, Hamza Isah Rantan, confirmed the incident in a social media post while mourning the victims.
He described the attack as a painful loss to the community and called for prayers for the deceased and those injured.
“INNALILLAHI WA’INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN 😭😭
“On Sunday night kidnappers attacked our town, Rantan, where they shot Alhaji Garab Buha, the APC ward chairman in Rantan, who later died in a hospital. They also killed another resident, Sulaiman Zunduma.
“We pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcoming and heals the injured.”
Buba’s death was also confirmed by a member of his family, Hafsat Garba Rantan, who identified him as her paternal uncle.
The attack reportedly occurred at a time when tension was already high in neighbouring communities following another violent incident in the area.
Hours before the Rantan attack, gunmen had reportedly invaded Chiromawa community in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.
The attackers were said to have abducted the Sarkin Noman Jihar Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa, during the incident.
Three people were reportedly killed in that attack, while several others sustained injuries.
The incident reportedly happened at about 11pm on Saturday.
The development prompted security concerns across communities around the area, particularly those located close to the boundaries with Katsina and Zamfara states.
The death of Buba is particularly important because he was a local political leader. His killing has therefore brought the security situation closer to the political community in the area.
Buba served as the APC chairman of Rantan Ward in Bebeji Local Government Area.
His death comes as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC remains the ruling political party in Kano following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the party earlier this year.
In another related development, the Kano State Police Command has confirmed that it launched an investigation into the killing of Buba and Zunduma.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori said the command was investigating the incident and working to identify and arrest those responsible.
The police investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and establish the identities of the attackers.
Residents have continued to call for stronger security measures in affected communities.
Many are also urging security agencies to increase patrols and respond more quickly to distress calls, particularly in rural areas that are vulnerable to attacks at night.
The attackers reportedly fled the community after carrying out the assault.
As of the latest reports, no group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack.
Security agencies have yet to announce any arrest in connection with the killing.
