Israeli media highlight concerns over Egypt’s growing military capabilities

Israeli media have once again highlighted Egypt’s growing military capabilities and moves linked to strengthening its military presence in Sinai, reflecting concerns within Israeli security and political circles.

Israeli platform News1 published a report citing Israeli security assessments regarding Egypt’s military capabilities. The report claimed that decision-makers in Tel Aviv are closely monitoring the modernisation and development programmes undertaken by the Egyptian army in recent years.

According to the report, some Israeli assessments believe that the scale of Egypt’s military procurement and training exceeds the requirements of traditional threats along its western and southern borders. This has prompted questions within Israeli circles about the long-term strategic objectives behind these capabilities.

It added that Israel views any military changes near its borders with particular sensitivity, especially in the Sinai Peninsula, which is subject to special security arrangements under the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. The report noted, however, that Cairo and Tel Aviv have maintained extensive security coordination in recent years to combat extremist groups in the region.

The report comes at a time of rapid security changes across the Middle East, prompting a number of countries to review their defence strategies and strengthen their military capabilities in response to emerging challenges and threats.
