Iranian parliament’s national security committee says US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding is no longer valid

Iran’s Parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said on Tuesday that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Iran and the United States is no longer valid, accusing Washington of violating its commitments under the agreement.

Committee member Fada Hossein Maleki told the Iranian news website Tabnak that recent US actions had undermined the agreement.

“With this current approach, there is no longer any point in continuing negotiations and implementing the agreement,” Maleki said. He warned that if the United States continued its current course, “the scope of the war will encompass the entire region.”

Maleki also criticized US President Donald Trump, alleging that Washington had breached numerous provisions of the memorandum.

According to Maleki, the agreement included commitments to ease sanctions on Iran’s oil and petrochemical sectors, but the US Treasury later announced new sanctions.

The United States and Iran signed the memorandum on 18th June, with the stated aim of ending the conflict that began in late February.

On 8th July, the United States resumed military strikes against targets in Iran. President Trump said the operation was a response to Iranian actions against commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran subsequently launched strikes against US military facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry described the US operation as a serious violation of the signed memorandum.

Commenting on the developments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow considers the US strikes a violation of the agreement between Washington and Tehran.

Lavrov argued that the attacks undermined prospects for a diplomatic resolution, stating that they had effectively closed the path to a negotiated settlement opened by the memorandum. He also expressed concern over the impact of the conflict on civilian infrastructure in Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
