‘I’m the boss,’ Trump tells G7 Leaders

US President Donald Trump drew laughter at the G7 summit in France on Wednesday after declaring himself “the boss” as he arrived for a meeting with leaders of the world’s leading economies.

Trump made the remark as he walked into the final working session of the three-day summit in the French resort town of Evian, where the other leaders were already seated.

“I’m the boss,” Trump said as he entered the room.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hosting the summit, appeared to take the comment in good humour.

“How are you?” Macron asked.

“Good, thank you,” Trump replied before taking his seat, prompting laughter among those present.

The US president has been the dominant figure at the summit, coming on the heels of a diplomatic breakthrough that helped end the war with Iran and amid renewed efforts to push for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

French officials were reportedly pleased that Trump remained for the entire summit and endorsed the final G7 communique, unlike at the previous summit in Canada, where he left before the event concluded.

Macron has also invited Trump to a private dinner at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris after the summit.

The French leader, however, stressed that the gathering would not be a “gala dinner”, amid criticism from opponents who accused him of being overly accommodating to the US president.

The summit, attended by leaders of the United States, France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada, is expected to conclude later on Wednesday after discussions on artificial intelligence, social media and global security challenges.
