“I’ll Free Nnamdi Kanu, Negotiate With Bandits If Elected President” – Peter Obi [VIDEO]

Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate for the 2027 election, has again declared that he would seek the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, if elected president.

The former Anambra State governor also said he would be willing to open discussions with armed groups and agitators across the country as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking during an engagement in Washington, Obi maintained that Kanu should not remain in detention over comments allegedly made on radio. According to him, dialogue remains a better option for resolving political and security disputes.

“I have said this repeatedly, there is no reason for detaining Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. You cannot arrest somebody just because the person is speaking on radio. I am a politician, people have been calling me names. If I am in government today, I will discuss and engage with all agitators,” Obi said.

He also reiterated his readiness to engage bandits as part of a broader peace strategy if he becomes president.

“I will free Nnamdi Kanu as president, he has done nothing wrong. I will also negotiate with Bandits,” he stated.

Obi argued that leadership should be open to dialogue, insisting that talking to people with grievances does not amount to endorsing their actions. He said communication can serve as a first step towards ending violence before stronger measures are applied where necessary.
