IGP Inspects 23 police barracks, promises better welfare for officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has inspected 23 police barracks in different parts of the country as part of measures to assess the welfare and living conditions of officers and their families.

The exercise provided the police leadership with an opportunity to examine the state of residential facilities and other welfare infrastructure used by personnel.

During the visits, Disu interacted with officers and residents of the barracks to identify pressing challenges, infrastructure deficiencies and areas requiring rehabilitation or further investment.

The Force Public Relations Officer,  Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying the inspection was intended to give the police authorities a clearer picture of the welfare needs of personnel and guide appropriate interventions.

According to the statement, the IGP considers the provision of decent accommodation and functional welfare facilities an important factor in maintaining the morale and operational effectiveness of officers.

Disu assured personnel that concerns identified during the inspections would be given appropriate attention.

He said, “Personnel who dedicate themselves to the protection of lives and property deserve decent and conducive living conditions.”

The IGP also linked improved welfare to the broader reform agenda of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that better living conditions were necessary to develop “a motivated, professional and effective Police Force.”

The inspection, according to the police, also reflected the Force’s decision to rely on direct assessments in determining the condition of its barracks and prioritising areas requiring urgent attention.

The authorities said the findings would help strengthen welfare support for police personnel and improve the condition of residential facilities occupied by officers and their families.

The Force further reaffirmed its commitment to improving the wellbeing of its personnel while equipping them with better conditions to carry out their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.
