Just In: NOUN Bursar, Nasiru Marafa shot dead in Zamfara

The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, has been shot dead in Zamfara State.

Marafa was reportedly killed on Sunday, September 6, 2026, while returning from Gusau, the state capital.

The university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, confirmed his death in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to the statement, Marafa was shot while travelling back from Gusau. The university said it received the information with sadness.

Ajayi said, “The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, Staff and Students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), regrets to announce the sudden and untimely passing of the University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, which occurred today, Sunday, 6th September 2026.”

He added that the university was informed that Marafa was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau.
Marafa became the Bursar of NOUN on September 17, 2022.

He was appointed for a five-year term which was expected to end in September 2027.

The university described him as a dedicated and hardworking administrator who contributed greatly to the development of the institution.

Ajayi said Marafa held several positions during his career and served the university with commitment.

Describing his death as a major loss to the institution, the registrar said Marafa was a distinguished colleague, a dedicated administrator and a valued member of the NOUN community.

The university expressed its condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and the entire NOUN community.

Details of his burial arrangements will be announced by his family.

The university prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and give his family, friends, colleagues and the university community the strength to cope with his death.
