“If you won’t help during omugwo, stay in your house” — lady tackles mother-in-law

A woman has sparked conversations online after recounting her friend’s difficult experience with a mother-in-law who allegedly failed to provide support during the traditional postpartum care period known as omugwo.

The lady shared the story on social media, drawing reactions over expectations and responsibilities tied to the cultural practice.

According to her, the incident occurred after her friend welcomed her first child, with limited family support available due to distance and personal constraints, leaving the mother-in-law as the only immediate help.

Mother-in-law accused of neglect during omugwo

“My friend’s mother-in-law came for omugwo with two of her grandchildren, aged 9 and 12. She didn’t help with anything, not cooking, not washing of clothes. My friend did everything herself and the mother-in-law would even add her own clothes and that of the children for her to wash. This went on for a week and even after her husband spoke to his mother, she didn’t change.”

Family tension worsens after second childbirth

“My friend’s mother is late and her sisters were far away, only one was in school writing exams, so the mother-in-law was the only option. Yet she came only to relax. When asked to leave, she got angry. Later, during the second child’s birth, she called to come again but was told not to bother. She began calling family members, accusing my friend of turning her son against her, but they stood their ground.”

The development echoes past discussions around omugwo expectations, as similar complaints surfaced in 2022 when social media users debated the evolving roles of in-laws in modern Nigerian families.
