“MTN is the biggest thief of data in Nigeria” — Sowore threatens nationwide protest
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has accused telecom giant MTN Nigeria of exploiting subscribers, warning that protests may erupt nationwide following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the company.
Sowore, who made the remarks on Tuesday, alleged widespread data depletion irregularities affecting users across Nigeria, insisting that telecom operators, including regulators, must be held accountable for what he described as systemic exploitation.
Allegations of data theft and extortion
“We gave MTN a seven-day ultimatum, and that ultimatum has now expired today. We are reviewing the situation, but unfortunately, we have not seen any positive changes. MTN is still stealing customers’ data. They remain the biggest thief of data in this country. Their attempt at whitewashing the issue by refunding small amounts like 46,000 Naira or even 400 Naira is nothing but damage control.”
Protest threat widens to other telcos
“In my own case, MTN steals about 55,000 Naira worth of data from me every month. I buy what is supposed to last a full month, yet it finishes in just three days. Many others report similar experiences. That is why we have people on standby across the country ready to protest and occupy MTN offices. This is not limited to MTN alone, Airtel, Globacom, and others, including regulators, are complicit.”
The allegations revive concerns raised in 2023 when subscribers complained about unexplained data depletion, prompting calls for stricter oversight of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
