I Risked My Life for Niger Delta Peace – Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he put his life at risk in the pursuit of lasting peace in the Niger Delta, stressing that difficult decisions taken during his administration helped reduce violence and restore stability in the oil-rich region.

Jonathan made the remark while reflecting on the security challenges that confronted the region during his time in office. According to reports, he said the effort to end years of militancy required courage, commitment and personal sacrifice, noting that several of the measures adopted were aimed at protecting lives, safeguarding national assets and creating opportunities for young people.

The former president explained that achieving peace in the Niger Delta was not an easy task, as the region had long experienced armed conflicts, attacks on oil installations and widespread insecurity. He stated that despite the risks involved, his administration remained committed to dialogue and peaceful engagement with stakeholders rather than allowing the crisis to escalate.

Jonathan noted that the Federal Government’s approach, which included strengthening the Presidential Amnesty Programme and expanding development initiatives, contributed significantly to reducing hostilities across the region. He added that the relative peace recorded during his tenure created a more stable environment for economic activities and oil production.

Speaking further, Jonathan urged political leaders and community stakeholders to continue prioritising peace, unity and development in the Niger Delta. He warned that any return to violence would undermine the region’s progress and negatively affect Nigeria’s economy.
