I Interrogated Her, The First Thing She Said, ‘I Did Not Kill Abacha, He Died On Top Of Me -Dennis Amachree

Former Department of State Services (DSS) Assistant Director Dennis Amachree has claimed that the first words spoken by the woman who was with late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, before his death were that she did not kill him and that he died on top of her.

According to a report by Punch on Tuesday July 21, 2026, Amachree made the claim in his memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield. According to him, he was ordered to locate and question the woman after Abacha died on June 8, 1998.

He said the woman, described as a pharmacist, had accompanied her elder sister, who was reportedly Abacha’s girlfriend, to the Presidential Villa in Abuja. After the elder sister left, the younger woman remained with the military ruler.

Amachree alleged that during an intimate encounter, Abacha suddenly became unresponsive. He claimed the woman checked for his pulse, found none, panicked, and left the villa before security officials were informed. She later travelled to Lagos on an early morning flight.

The retired DSS officer said his team tracked her down in Lagos and brought her in for questioning. He said she insisted from the beginning that she was not responsible for Abacha’s death.

According to Amachree, after hearing her account, he informed DSS headquarters and she was flown back to Abuja.

He maintained that her explanation supports his claim that Abacha died from a cardiac arrest during intercourse, dismissing long-standing conspiracy theories surrounding the former military ruler’s sudden death.
