Heavy rain triggers first flash floods in Adamawa communities

The town of Ganye has experienced a major flood incident that heralds the onset of rains in the usually hot and dry Adamawa State.

The flood extended from the southern Adamawa town to some parts of the capital, Yola, in what appears to have been a widespread rainfall.

Witnesses who spoke from Ganye told DAILY POST on  Sunday morning that nearly every home in Ganye had a feel of flood water, at least by way of overflows from street gutters around them.

“Dirty flood waters gushed out of drains and entered many houses, destroyed assets and made many roads impassable,” Miss Joy Julde who was in Ganye for the weekend said about the flood.

She added that many houses that escaped the ordeal of having to vacate their abodes still had to deal with flooded street-sides.

The town which is headquarters of Ganye LGA and seat of the Ganye Emirate was said to have experienced hours of continuous heavy rainfall, hence what has been described as severe flooding.

There has been no report of any death, at least not by Sunday afternoon when this report was concluded, but  many Ganye residents reported several  losses.

In Yola, parts of Jimeta, the political and commercial nerve of the state, the same reality of flood water overflowing drainages and rivers, as in Ganye, occuured, with the neighbourhood of the city’s main shopping centre, the Jimeta Modern Market affected.

A lady who went to the market after the council election in the later part of the day, Martha Jeremiah, expressed surprise that the usually well-kept concrete grounds of the market were flooded.

“I got to the Gate 1 area but had to return home because the whole entrance and inside were flooded,” Martha said.
