Ghanaian Activist Sabato Allegedly Attacked in South Africa Amid Rising Anti-Foreigner Tensions

Ghanaian content creator and online activist Sabato has reportedly been attacked in South Africa during what has been described as an anti-immigration operation.

According to reports circulating online, Sabato was targeted after being suspected of involvement in illegal activities. A viral video shared on social media showed him among a group of foreign nationals who were allegedly rounded up by vigilante groups.

The individuals in the video were seen seated on the ground while being accused of being undocumented immigrants involved in criminal activities.

A post by We Love Ghana claimed that Sabato, known for his support of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had returned to South Africa from the United Kingdom with valid travel documents before the incident occurred.

According to the post, he alleged that South African police officers and some locals assaulted him after accusing him of being a Nigerian drug dealer. He also claimed that his property was damaged and that money and other valuables were stolen during the attack.

In another video, Sabato described the incident, saying that he was physically assaulted and that his home was invaded by a large group of people.

He claimed that a crowd broke down the gate to his home and attacked him, adding that he felt foreign nationals were not receiving adequate protection.

The incident comes amid growing concerns over anti-foreigner attacks in South Africa.

Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly appealed to Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama to help mobilize other African leaders in support of efforts to address the ongoing tensions.

Ramaphosa described the attacks as an African problem that requires a collective African response. He said South Africa plans to send envoys across the continent to explain measures being taken to deal with the situation.

He also acknowledged that unemployment, insecurity, and poor service delivery have contributed to rising tensions but stressed that cooperation among African countries is needed to find lasting solutions.

President Mahama has also commented on the situation, saying diplomatic relations between Ghana and South Africa remain strong despite recent incidents involving Ghanaian nationals.

Speaking during a visit to the United Kingdom, Mahama said there had been no breakdown in relations between the two countries. However, he described the attacks on foreigners as unfortunate and called for deeper efforts to understand and address the root causes.

He noted that nearly 200 Ghanaians had sought refuge at Ghana’s embassy during the recent unrest and that evacuation flights had been arranged for those who wished to return home voluntarily.

Mahama added that African countries should work together to address the issues fueling hostility toward foreigners and emphasized the positive contributions migrants make through skills, knowledge, and investment.
