EIRS restructures operations to boost revenue, efficiency

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has unveiled a new organisational structure aimed at enhancing revenue generation and strengthening operational efficiency.

A statement by the Head of Corporate Communications and Taxpayers Enlightenment Services Department, Mr Courage Eboigbe, said the restructuring was announced at a management meeting held held in Benin City and attended by members of the EIRS Board, senior management staff, and the State Tax Controller of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), who participated as an observer.

Speaking at the unveiling, the Executive Chairman of EIRS, Mr John Odior, described the reform as a long-overdue milestone designed to improve tax administration and address internal operational challenges. He noted that the restructuring is anchored on transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery.

The new framework introduces specialised departments, including Enforcement and Compliance; Landlord Tax and Stamp Duty; and Digital Economy and Emerging Taxpayers Intelligence Unit.

It also establishes a Facility, Security and Safety Department, as well as a Department of Corporate Communications and Taxpayer Enlightenment Services to strengthen public engagement.

To streamline field operations, EIRS has reduced its zonal offices from 14 to eight, each headed by a Zonal Tax Controller.

However, the Service will retain its 60 existing branch offices under Tax Controllers to ensure accessibility for taxpayers.

Odior said the changes take immediate effect, signalling a new phase in the agency’s drive towards a modern and efficient tax system.
