Drone smashes into beachgoers near Putin’s Black Sea palace killing four as Ukraine’s aerial onslaught continues

A drone crashed onto a crowded beach near Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Black Sea residence after being intercepted by Russian air defences, reportedly killing at least four people, including a child, and injuring 10 others.

The incident occurred at Arkhipo-Osipovka, a resort village on Russia’s Black Sea coast, close to Putin’s reported Gelendzhik residence. Videos circulating online showed the damaged drone descending toward the beach before exploding, sending beachgoers running for safety as thick smoke rose from the scene. Some people were seen taking cover beneath sun loungers.

Witnesses said they heard air defence gunfire moments before the explosion but claimed no warning sirens were activated. He said: “I’m in complete shock. We were on the beach, didn’t have time to leave, hid behind a ledge, covered ourselves with sun loungers, and didn’t see where it exploded.”

Another eyewitness said: “While we were parking, we saw crowds of people leaving the beach, cars driving away. A friend called me and said we had to turn around and leave because a drone had crashed. We saw a man with a bloody shoulder.”

A tourist who left the beach with family members said: “I’m leaving here with my family. This all happened in front of the children, and the child is having a nervous breakdown.”

The beach is about 27 kilometres from Putin’s reported Gelendzhik palace, a heavily fortified Black Sea residence that has frequently been linked to the Russian president.

Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev confirmed the casualties, saying: “The death toll in Arkhipo-Osipovka has risen to four following drone debris, with a further 10 people injured. On the governor’s instructions, a specialist disaster medicine team has been dispatched to the scene. Two adults and one child have been taken to hospital.”

Ukraine has not officially commented on the incident. The beach explosion came as Ukraine intensified long-range drone attacks targeting Russian infrastructure. Recent strikes have hit several facilities linked to Wildberries, Russia’s largest e-commerce platform, as well as oil depots, fuel infrastructure and drone production sites.

Russia analyst Natia Seskuria said the strategy could significantly affect everyday life in Russia. He said: “It’s a very smart strategy from the Ukrainian side… it will have a significant impact on Russian households. This is something new and something that we haven’t seen before, but I think the message is still the same in terms of making the war extremely costly for Russia.”

Russia expert Mark Galeotti said the attacks are designed to bring the impact of the war closer to ordinary Russians. “Frankly all across the country this did seem to be a war that was happening a long way away and obviously things will change now.”

According to Russian authorities, Ukraine launched one of its largest aerial attacks of the war overnight, involving drones, missiles and bombs targeting multiple regions. Russia said it has also increased security measures for shipping in the Azov-Black Sea basin while developing alternative cargo routes.
