Defence HQ Mourns Major General Rabe Abubakar Who Died In Bandits’ Captivity

The Defence Headquarters has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former military spokesperson and senior officer of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, following his passing on while in captivity after being abducted by terrorists.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the military described his death as a tragic development and a significant loss to the nation and the Armed Forces.

The statement revealed that the military had deliberately refrained from making public comments about Abubakar’s abduction while efforts were underway to secure his release.

According to the Defence Headquarters, all available operational resources were mobilised in collaboration with other security agencies in an attempt to rescue him safely.

“Every operational resource was deployed in the hope of securing his safe return,” the statement said.

It noted that throughout his career, Abubakar made significant contributions to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaigns and played a key role in the professional development of military personnel. His dedication to national service, the military said, left a lasting impact on the Armed Forces and the country’s security architecture.

“His commitment to duty and to the unity of Nigeria remains a shining example for all personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement added.

The military high command extended its condolences to the family of the deceased officer, his former colleagues, and Nigerians at large, describing his passing as a painful loss.

The Defence Headquarters said the loss of the retired officer would further strengthen the resolve of the Armed Forces to confront terrorism, banditry, and other security threats confronting the country.

The military disclosed that ongoing security operations across various theatres have been intensified in response to recent abductions, including that of Major General Abubakar. It vowed to bring those responsible to justice and dismantle criminal and terrorist networks operating within the country.

“This sad loss further strengthens the resolve of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. We will remain resolute in the discharge of our constitutional mandate to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and to protect all citizens,” the statement said.

The Defence Headquarters reassured Nigerians that security forces would continue to pursue those behind acts of terrorism and violent crimes until peace and stability are restored across the country.

“We assure Nigerians that the Armed Forces will not relent until peace and security are restored and those responsible for terrorist activities across the nation are held to account,” the military stated.

The death of the retired general comes amid growing concerns over the rising wave of kidnappings and insecurity across several parts of Nigeria. In recent years, criminal gangs and terrorist groups have increasingly targeted both civilians and high-profile individuals for abduction, often demanding ransom payments or using hostages as leverage.
