Correctional Officials Move Sowore To Kuje Prison

Officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on Monday formally took custody of activist, publisher and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, following proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The transfer took place under tight security as correctional officers arrived at the court premises in a prison transport vehicle, commonly referred to as a “Black Maria,” to receive the activist from operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to reports, Sowore was brought out from an undisclosed location within the court complex at approximately 2:10 p.m. by DSS personnel and subsequently handed over to officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Following the transfer of custody, he was conveyed to the Kuje Correctional Centre, where he is expected to remain pending further developments in his case.

Despite the circumstances surrounding his detention, Sowore appeared calm and energetic as he briefly interacted with supporters who had gathered at the court premises.

Addressing the crowd, the activist urged his supporters not to lose hope in their quest for a better Nigeria, stressing that the struggle for accountability, justice and good governance must continue regardless of challenges.

He encouraged them to remain steadfast in advocating for social and political reforms, assuring them that he remained committed to the cause he has championed for years.

Sowore also informed supporters that he would return to court on Wednesday when his trial is scheduled to continue.

During his interaction with journalists and supporters, the AAC presidential candidate questioned the decision to transport him in a prison van, arguing that individuals accused of looting public resources are often treated more favourably by authorities.

According to him, it was ironic that public officials facing corruption allegations are frequently conveyed in more comfortable vehicles, while activists and critics of government policies are transported in correctional vehicles.

He remarked that he would have preferred being moved in a Hilux vehicle rather than the prison transport van provided for his transfer.

The activist used the opportunity to reiterate his long-standing position on governance and accountability, insisting that he would continue to speak out against policies and actions he believes undermine the future of Nigeria and its citizens.

Sowore maintained that his advocacy is driven by a desire to secure a better future for younger generations and ensure that public officials remain accountable to the people.

He vowed to continue demanding transparency, responsible leadership and improved governance, regardless of the personal consequences he may face.

The development attracted attention from supporters, civil society groups and observers, many of whom have continued to monitor the legal proceedings involving the activist.

His transfer to the Kuje Correctional Centre comes as anticipation grows ahead of the next hearing in the case, which is expected to resume before the Federal High Court on Wednesday.
