CONFIRMED: Amorim takes charge as AC Milan appoint former Man United boss

AC Milan have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the club’s new head coach, with the Portuguese manager signing a two-year contract following his departure from Manchester United earlier this year.

The 41-year-old succeeds Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed after Milan failed to secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League following a disappointing end to the campaign.

Amorim arrives in Italy after a difficult spell at Manchester United, where he was sacked in January after 14 months in charge at Old Trafford. Despite his struggles in England, the former Sporting CP coach remains highly regarded across Europe for his success in Portugal.

Amorim fulfils long-held Milan ambition

Speaking after his appointment, Amorim admitted that managing AC Milan had always been one of his career ambitions.

“There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,” Amorim said.

“I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm.”

Milan described Amorim as a coach who brings a “modern dominant tactical approach” as they look to rebuild after a disappointing campaign.

Before moving to Manchester United in November 2024, Amorim earned widespread praise for his achievements at Sporting, where he ended the club’s 19-year wait for a league title in the 2020-21 season before winning another championship in 2023-24.

New chapter begins in Italy

Italian media reports claim Amorim will forgo the salary he was still owed by Manchester United following his dismissal, allowing him to begin his Milan project immediately.

His first match in charge of the Rossoneri will be a pre-season fixture against Celtic on July 25. Interestingly, Milan will conclude their pre-season preparations against Manchester United in Wroclaw on August 15.

Amorim now faces the task of restoring Milan to the Champions League and returning one of Europe’s most successful clubs to the top of Italian football.
