Bukola Saraki: This Republic is not a property you inherit when your elders are finished with it

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has called on young Nigerians to become more involved in the country’s political and governance processes, saying leadership should not be reserved for older generations alone, according to a report by The Punch dated Friday, June 12, 2026.

He made the appeal while speaking at The Platform’s June Forum in Lagos during the Democracy Day commemorations. Saraki underscored the need for continuous reforms that encourage broader political inclusion, especially for young people.

He pointed to the impact of the Not Too Young To Run law, explaining that it was introduced to lower barriers and create space for youths to contest elections and actively participate in shaping national development.

Saraki encouraged increased youth engagement in politics, insisting that governance is not something to be inherited or postponed. In his words, he said the republic belongs to the younger generation as much as anyone else.

He further noted that democracy functions best when citizens take an active role in governance rather than remaining passive observers, particularly in holding leaders accountable.

The former Senate President also stressed the importance of the legislature in sustaining democratic systems, describing it as a key institution for oversight, accountability, and conflict resolution within government.

According to him, lawmakers have a constitutional duty to examine government policies, budgets, and public expenditure to ensure they serve the interests of citizens.

Saraki also advocated for stronger democratic institutions, improved transparency, and deeper civic participation, adding that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive when citizens remain engaged and vigilant.

He urged Nigerians to pay closer attention to the performance of elected officials, suggesting that leaders should be assessed based on their records and actions rather than personalities or political branding.
