BREAKING: Nigerian Police Arrests Officer Who Threatened To Kill Nigerians Filming Him On Duty

According to a statement by Nigeria Police Force on Facebook on 21st May 2026, ASP Newton Isokpehi has been arrested following video of him threatening to shoot anyone who films him on duty.

In the video, the officer was seen making threatening remarks against members of the public who were filming police activities. The Force has emphasized that such conduct and statements are unacceptable, unprofessional, and not in line with the ethics, standards, and code of conduct expected of police officers.

They reiterated that this behavior contradicts the ongoing reforms aimed at fostering transparency, accountability, professionalism, and citizen-focused policing.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, was reported to have consistently stated that members of the public have the right to record police officers performing their duties lawfully. However, he also pointed out that such recording should not obstruct police operations, compromise safety, or interfere with lawful activities.

Following the circulation of the video, the officer involved was identified and summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters. The Force indicated that disciplinary procedures had been initiated against the officer.

They also stressed that threats, intimidation, abuse of office, or any conduct capable of undermining public trust in law enforcement would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Finally, the Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed that recording police activities remains a legitimate means of ensuring accountability and transparency. They assured the public that such recordings should not lead to harassment or intimidation by police personnel.
