According to a report by BBC SPORT on Sunday July 5, 2026, Erling Haaland inspired Norway to one of the biggest victories in their football history as his clinical brace secured a stunning 2-1 win over Brazil and sent the Scandinavian side into the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
The prolific striker was deservedly named Man of the Match after producing a decisive display against the five-time world champions.Favor And Life Battles? (Silent spiritual powers of favor). Haaland delivered when it mattered most, leading Norway’s attack with power, movement and composure throughout the contest. After a tightly contested first half, the Manchester City forward broke the deadlock in the 79th minute. Andreas Schjelderup floated a clever pass into the penalty area and Haaland rose above the defence before powering an unstoppable header into the right side of the net.
The Norwegian captain was not finished. Deep into stoppage time, Schjelderup once again turned provider with a perfectly weighted pass to Haaland on the edge of the box. The striker took his opportunity brilliantly, firing a precise finish into the bottom-right corner to double Norway’s advantage and seemingly put the match beyond Brazil’s reach.
Beyond his two goals, Haaland remained a constant threat to Brazil’s defence. He stretched the backline with intelligent runs, linked play effectively and forced the hosts to stay on alert whenever Norway launched forward. His relentless work rate helped create space for teammates and ensured Norway remained dangerous on the counterattack.
Norway also received outstanding contributions from goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, who produced one of the saves of the tournament by denying Bruno Guimaraes from the penalty spot in the first half after a VAR review awarded Brazil a spot-kick. Schjelderup also made a major impact after coming on at half-time, providing assists for both of Haaland’s goals.
Brazil managed to reduce the deficit in the closing moments when Neymar converted a penalty after Leo Ostigard was penalised for a foul inside the area. However, the late goal was only a consolation as Norway held firm to complete a memorable victory.
