BREAKING: “A Gov’t That Cannot Protect Schoolchildren Has Failed One Of The Most Basic Tests Of Leadership–Atiku Abubakar

According to a report by The Cable on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that insecurity has become “a way of life” under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, expressing concern over the growing frequency of kidnappings and violent attacks across the country.

Atiku made the assertion in a statement issued on Wednesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.

In the statement, the former Vice President reacted to the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, describing the incident as another tragic indication of the worsening security challenges confronting the nation.

According to reports, the victims were abducted on May 15 when armed men attacked Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School in Ogbomoso, all located within Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The attack resulted in the kidnapping of pupils and members of staff, raising concerns among residents and families of the victims.

Reacting to the development, Atiku stated that the incident reflects the difficult reality faced by many Nigerians living under the constant threat of kidnapping and violence.

He said the security situation had deteriorated to the point where some parents now reportedly make financial preparations for potential ransom payments in the same manner they budget for their children’s education and other essential needs.

The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also criticized reports indicating that government officials provided bags of rice and other palliatives to the families of the abducted pupils and teachers.

He described the reported action as insensitive, arguing that the primary concern of affected families should be the safe return of their loved ones rather than material assistance.According to him, such a response fails to address the gravity of the situation confronting the victims and their relatives.

He said, “A government that cannot protect schoolchildren has failed one of the most basic tests of leadership.”
