Boy, 12, believed he was going ‘to die’ after grisly shark attack on Bahamas family vacation

The 12-year-old boy attacked by a massive reef shark 60 miles off the Bahamas during a family trip said he was certain he was about to die before his quick-thinking older brother came to his rescue and saved his life.

Parker Roll, of Friendswood, Texas, said he’d never felt such agonizing pain as he relived the terrifying moment an 8-to-10-foot, razor-tooth shark clamped onto his leg while he was swimming near Staniel Cay island during a boat tour of the Exuma Cays last Tuesday.

“I just thought I was gonna die,” Roll told Good Morning America.

“I didn’t really feel it at first because there was so much adrenaline but I remember looking down and I just see this head and its head was well over a foot wide. I’ve never felt pain like that cause there was the salt water and huge wounds and tons of teeth marks.”

Parker’s 16-year-old brother, Jack, spotted the predator moments before the grisly attack, initially mistaking it for a rock before brushing the creature off as a “really big” harmless nurse shark.

Seconds later, his brother’s “ear-piercing” screams rang out as blood stained the crystal-blue water.

“I immediately took off my swimsuit because I was like, oh we need to stop that bleeding,” Jack recalled.

“I ran over there, wrapped it around his leg and then picked him up and started carrying him over to the beach” he added, before others rushed in to help haul Parker over to the boat.

But with no cell service or radio signal on the remote island – and a 60-mile trek back to shore – the Roll family said they were left to do nothing but pray until they reached the hospital.

“The whole boat was praying on that ride back cause it was very uncertain how it was gonna turn out,” Parker’s dad told the outlet.

The wounded child underwent surgery and was treated for severe injuries to his leg and foot, receiving roughly 30 to 40 stitches.

His “very grateful and blessed” parents said doctors are optimistic about their son’s recovery.

“I definitely consider myself very lucky as that shark could have easily taken my leg off,” Parker said, crediting his heroic older brother for saving his life.

“I definitely consider him as my hero as he stopped the bleeding and saved my life.”
