Army Captain under probe for alleged sexual abuse in Jos

The Nigerian Army said it launched probe of allegation of sexual abuse levelled against a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, attached to the Headquarters of 3 Division, Jos, Plateau State.

The Army disclosed this in a statement on Friday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya.

The statement was issued in reaction to the allegation about the alleged sexual abuse circulating online.

Nigerian Army, in the statement, affirmed that it is treating the allegation with utmost seriousness particularly as it reportedly involves a minor or vulnerable person.

Army said in the statement that it has initiated appropriate steps to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.

It, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions on the culpability or otherwise of the officer while the investigation remains ongoing.

While promising that the investigation would be conducted in line with the principles of due process, fairness and protection of the rights and dignity of all parties involved, the Army added that relevant civil authorities were also probing the alleged sexual abuse.

He assured that the Nigerian Army would fully cooperate with them to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation in accordance with extant laws and regulations.

The Army also stressed that discipline, professionalism and respect for human dignity remain core values of the service.

It therefore assured that any personnel found, at the conclusion of the investigation, to have acted contrary to the law or established military regulations would face appropriate sanctions.

But the Army also urged members of the public to refrain from speculation, circulation of unverified information or any action capable of prejudicing the investigation.

It therefore appealed for appealed for protection of privacy and wellbeing of the persons involved, particularly any minor who may be connected to the matter.

It also promised to make further information available to the public as appropriate, subject to legal requirements and the integrity of the ongoing investigative process.
